There is a limited macro facility (again, not part of the manuel). To define a macro, type
#def MACRONAME Body#Note the second `
#
' sign. MACRONAME can be any unused sequence
of letters, simple quote, and point.
This can be useful if a name appears often.
Example:

\end{hieroglyph}
Note that, once defined, these macros can be used in all
subsequent hieroglyph
environment.
